Landlord Behind Viral TikTok About Taking Tenant’s Packages as Late Rent Says It Was a Joke

The New York City woman who made a TikTok clip about stealing packages from tenants’ doors when rent was late said it was all a joke after the video went viral. She also said landlords need compassion too.

Paying rent during this time of record high unemployment and furlough rates is a contentious topic. Abbe Awosanya, the package pilfering landlord, wants the public to consider a building owner’s precarious position when tenants don’t pay rent.

Awosanya posted the clip last week showing her dancing to the song “Skechers” by DripReport. She walks into her home and tosses a package aside.

“My tenant is late on rent and is avoiding me but has money to order,” says her captions. “So I take all their packages until they pay up.”

“I’m so petty,” another caption read.

On TikTok, her clip was viewed at least 200,000 times before it began showing up on Twitter where it was viewed hundreds of thousands of times more.

Commenters flooded her TikTok video, many not supporting her strategy to get tenants to pay their rent.

And when commenters suggested that what she was doing was illegal, she claimed the packages were really items she had ordered and received at her own home and that people needed to have sympathy for the landlords too. She told BuzzFeed News that people should have “compassion” for both renters and landlords “because we are all going through the pandemic together.”

BuzzFeed News also reported that Awosanya assured them that all her current renters are in good standing.

Since the blowback, Awosanya has deleted her all her social media accounts.

What do you think? Should she have made the joke? Should people calm down?
