I love Trader Joe’s. They have unique products, the stores are small enough to be manageable, the staff members are friendly, and they have cookie butter ice cream. What’s not to like?
I’m trying to work on my budget, though, and I love a good bargain.
So, how do you make the most of a trip to Trader Joe’s? Here are six tips for your next shopping trip.
1. Try before you buy
Want to try a new and exciting Trader Joe’s product? You don’t need to buy the whole box to find out if you like it. Trader Joe’s allows you to try some of their products before you buy, including snacks, cheese, and produce. Just be sure to ask an employee before you open up a bag. Also, if you change your mind once you get home, the store offers an amazing return policy. You can return items for any reason.
2. Keep your kids entertained while you shop
A Trader Joe’s employee confirmed on Reddit that every store has a stuffed animal hidden somewhere for kids to find. Your kids can enjoy a treasure hunt while you get your weekly shopping done. Win-win.
3. They take coupons
Obviously, the best savings are on their private label products, and you can’t use coupons on those. Trader Joe’s also sells brand-name products, though, and you can use coupons for those. Products vary from store to store, though.
4. You buy all your dairy and produce at Trader Joe’s?
Although Trader Joe’s has a lot of bargains, their dairy and produce sections aren’t the cheapest around. Some specialty cheeses can be had for a bargain, but for milk, veggies, and fruit, you may want to another store.
5. Check the meat prices
For some meat options, you may want to opt for frozen rather than fresh. Trader Joe’s prices can vary significantly if you buy frozen instead of fresh. Plus, it won’t go bad in your fridge before you can cook it.
6. BYOB
Remember to take your shopping bag with you! Not only is it better for the environment, but you will also be entered into a raffle if you spend at least $25 in the store and you brought your own bag.
