As parents, we’re always looking for the best and most effective ways to discipline our kids. I think that some people either don’t realize or forget, though, that the root of the word is “disciple.”

That means the goal is to get our kids to follow our lead, not to punish the with arbitrary consequences.

This mom might be a bit out of line with her chosen punishment style, according to the parents of the internet.

I have resorted to burning Pokémon cards as a punishment when my kid doesn’t do basic stuff he has to do.

She said that she burns her child’s Pokemon cards when he doesn’t eat properly, since he’s underweight and needs to rectify the problems.

(The basic stuff is eating. He comes home without having eaten any of his lunch? Card burnt. He doesn’t eat enough dinner? Card burnt. Bear in mind my kid is about 4’6” tall at age 7 and yet weighs less than 55 pounds. He needs to put some weight on, specifically muscle).

Liz, this is really sad. I hear you about the lunch troubles. It's so hard when they don't eat, especially when there's a medical issue going on. There's some decent advice in these replies. I think asking his pediatrician is a good one & maybe consulting a child therapist.

Fast forward a few yrs (and me dropping to under 80 lbs as an 8th grader), & I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. They (doctor &parents) had NO IDEA that was a possibility

Sit with it for a minute, because it’s not good.

So you’re teaching him that nothing actually belongs to him, because you can take it away and destroy it at any time.

It needs to be solved, for the good of everyone involved.

It could be an eating disorder, a food allergy, taste or texture sensitivity, there are dozens of things it could be. Burning his cards solves none of them.

I’m not big on mom shaming or internet pile-ons, but sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees, and I hope this mom and her kid can work together to find a better way.
