Boseman himself produced 21 Bridges, and he fiercely advocated for Miller’s spot in the film. Here’s what went down according to Miller:

“He approached me to do it, he offered me this film, and it was at a time when I really didn’t want to work anymore.”

When Miller joined the team, she requested a certain pay point. In spite of a pretty hefty budget, studio heads did not meet her request. That’s when Boseman stepped in and donated part of his own salary. He took a significant pay cut that put Miller’s paycheck in a much better position.

It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman.⁣ ⁣ Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV. ⁣ ⁣ A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. ⁣ ⁣ It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. ⁣ ⁣ He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. ⁣ ⁣ The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. ⁣ ⁣ Photo Credit: @samjonespictures

Reflecting on what Boseman did for her, Miller remarked:

“Chadwick ended up donating some of his salary to get me to the number that I had asked for. He said that that was what I deserved to be paid.

It was about the most astounding thing that I’ve experienced. That kind of thing just doesn’t happen.

He said, ‘You’re getting paid what you deserve, and what you’re worth.”

What an incredible thing to learn about Boseman, especially as the touching tributes continue to pour in – like this one from Letitia Wright.

According to Miller, Hollywood isn’t exactly teeming with altruism like that. She’s since told other actors about this story, and here’s how they’ve responded:

They all go very, very quiet and go home and probably have to sit and think about things for a while.
