The Reason Why John Krasinski Wore a Wig in Season 3 Of ‘The Office’

Did you know John Krasinski wore a wig during Season 3 of The Office?

We’re willing to bet you didn’t. Initially, not even the series’ showrunner, Greg Daniels, did.

During the filming of Season 3, Krasinski, who plays lovable goofball Jim Halpert, also had a significant role in the film Leatherheads, which called for him to cut his hair. He wanted to wear a wig to film the remaining Office episodes, but the producers nixed the idea, saying everyone would know it was a hairpiece.

According to Office stylist Kim M. Ferry, TV actors have contractual obligations that call for them to keep their hair in one style, length, and color, so as not to mess up continuity between episodes.

As Krasinski had already accepted the role in the film, he had to cut his hair regardless and took the opportunity to prove Office producers wrong. With help of Ferry, he purchased a wig and had her style it like his hair.

Krasinski went into a second meeting—this time with Daniels—and said again that he wanted to cut his hair. Daniels replied that it was just not possible, and a wig would be too noticeable.

Krasinski finally fessed up to the shocked showrunner, and whipped off the wig to show that he’d already cut it.

The last six episodes of the third season feature Krasinski in his wig, but in the season finale, he is shown getting a haircut for a corporate interview, and we can only assume that what we see is real hair.
