I know that you’re thinking I’m probably biased because 1999 was one of the best years of my relative youth, and yeah, you’re right about that.
I maintain, though, that objectively speaking, that year will still never be topped musically. And not just because of N’Sync, either.

I preferred her, personally. Genie in a Bottle was my jam.
14. Kid Rock and Offspring leapt onto the scene.
Who could live without Cowboy and Pretty Fly For a White Guy?
13. Boyband love was at an all-time high.
I picked my friends based on their answer to “Backstreet Boys or N’Sync?”
12. Blink-182 had the year of their career.
They would never top What’s My Age Again or All the Small Things.
11. Hit Me Baby One More Time spent weeks at number one.
The music video will forever be iconic, I don’t care who you are.
10. Lenny Kravitz dropped the biggest hits of his career.
Namely Fly Away and American Woman.
9. Even if you weren’t a BSB fan, you have to admit I Want it That Way is brilliant.
Even I can at least nod.
8. We met Eminem for the first time.
You might not love him, but you know My Name Is, whether you want to or not.
7. 98 Degrees popped onto the scene.
They were 3rd tier, but The Hardest Thing was a decent song.
6. Everyone still loved The Dixie Chicks.
Rightfully so, because they are queens. New album soon!
5. Shania Twain bombed the scene with some much needed feminism.
Come on Over was the soundtrack for a year of my life.
4. You probably danced to Amazed by Lonestar.
If you were at a dance or something.
3. Jennifer Lopez made her debut as a singer.
If You Had My Love and Waiting for Tonight were instant classics.
2. You loved The Goo-Goo Dolls.
Slide and Black Balloon were everyone’s jam.
1. Believe by Cher kicked everyone’s a**.
It was the number one song of the year.
