Bill Nye “The Science Guy” Shows How Effective Masks Can Actually Be

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen different takes on masks from the government, scientists, and the general public. But what’s the real story?

Scientist, comedian, and author Bill Nye has spilled the tea on TikTok regarding the effectiveness of masks with a simple experiment that has gone viral.

As you know, both the CDC and the WHO recommend wearing face coverings in public to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19. Studies have shown that wearing masks can reduce the likelihood of the virus being spread from one person to another.

In his video, Nye demonstrates how effective masks are at stopping or diminishing virus particles by covering his face with three masks—a scarf, a homemade mask, and an N95 medical-grade mask.

He then attempts to blow out a candle using all three.

The scarf is the weakest of the three; while it can block air movement, it does so only to a certain extent, and he can easily blow the candle out.

The layered cloth mask is better—he can’t blow the candle out easily. In fact, its flame barely moves.

The medical-grade mask is the best bet; it offers the most coverage, and the flame doesn’t move at all.

The lesson Nye imparts is that, while it’s important to wear a mask in public, it’s also important as to what kind of mask you choose. If you leave the medical-grade masks to essential workers, the layered cloth mask you wear to the grocery store should still protect you and others. But choose one that you can wear comfortably and consistently.
