No child should live in fear. But for some children, the presence of the police can present a fearful situation based on the history of violence against the Black community.

That proved to be the case for a 10-year-old boy in Connecticut. Stacey Pierre-Louis shared a heartbreaking video of his 10-year-old son, Eliah, hiding in fear as a police car drives by.

The Trumbull native posted the eye-opening footage on Instagram:

Debated with myself for a few days before deciding to post this. I was at work watching my son shoot hoops in the driveway when I caught this. It floored me… I’ll save the dramatics, but growing up black or brown most of the time means fearing the police vs looking up to them. I live in an affluent neighborhood in Trumbull with a really good school system. This kid has all the opportunity to do/be whatever he wants unlike many kids who look like him because resources aren’t made available. Why does he feel like he has to hide when he isn’t doing anything wrong? I asked him why he did that when he got home. He replied; “because they killed George Floyd”. Stunned, I replied;ok kiddo. I didn’t know what and still don’t know what to say to him to make it better. A manager at my job told me to tell him that doing what he did is ridiculous and that I should teach him not to be fearful of police. Deep down I don’t know if it’s true, maybe staying out of the way is best. He didn’t learn this behavior at home. We stream movies so he doesn’t see the news and we don’t talk negatively about police. No need to reply in the comments, but think to yourself.. What would you say?

In the video, you can see Elia shooting hoops before he quickly stops playing when he notices a police cruiser driving up the road.

Elia hides behind the safety of a jeep before getting back to hooping.

For Stacey, his son’s reaction proved shocking. At the same time, it highlighted the reality of what the Black community feels.

Why does he feel like he has to hide when he isn’t doing anything wrong?”

As if that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, Elia’s response about why he hid will send chills through your spine: “Because they killed George Gloyd.”

The video did catch the attention of some prominent celebrities.

LeBron James couldn’t contain his emotions after seeing Elia:

At the end of the day, Elia’s story probably isn’t unique.

That very fact illustrates that much work needs to be done in order to ensure that more children do not grow up in fear of the police.

What is your experience with the police? Do you have any fears about law enforcement?
