That Dramatic Reimagining of “Fresh Prince” Is Officially Going to Series

That viral “Fresh Prince” fan-made trailer is officially going to series.

NBC’s streaming service Peacock just ordered two seasons of Morgan Cooper’s dark rendition of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” In Hollywood, that’s like the Holy Grail of all deals.

It’s a move that’s basically unheard of. Given how incredible Cooper’s fan-made trailer was, it’s no surprise that this project is the exception to the rule.

Here’s a glimpse, for those who missed it.

That’s enough to give any “Fresh Prince” fan chills. Cooper’s trailer immediately went viral, racking up over 5 million views on YouTube. It also caught the attention of several members of the original cast, including Tatyana Ali and Will Smith.

A month after the trailer dropped, the Fresh Prince himself met up with Morgan Cooper in Miami to discuss the trailer’s impact. Smith shared his feelings about Cooper’s vision and their meeting together on his YouTube channel. Together, the pair discussed the layers of “Fresh Prince” that couldn’t be expressed in thirty minutes of air time.

Of the original “Fresh Prince”, Smith said:

“As funny as the episodes are [of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air], there was a whole other layer that you couldn’t do.

Like, in a one-hour drama, you can do eight-episode arcs!”

Smith also reflected on the first time he saw Cooper’s trailer, stating:

“This is the first time that I heard something that I was like, that’s an idea that’s brilliant.”

Evidently, a lot of TV executives felt the same way about the trailer. Within a year, the Hollywood Reporter sent out a tweet stating that a “Fresh Prince” remake was in the works. Cooper retweeted, revealing that his project was the one in question.

Cooper will co-write, direct, and executive produce the new series. Original “Fresh Prince” producers and creators are also working on the project alongside Cooper. There’s no word on a specific release date or cast yet, but we know for sure that the series will at least have two seasons to amp up the drama.

This series looks so sick. It’s the breath of fresh that we need right now.
