The creative juices flowing through some people are truly mind-blowing.

For instance, why make a regular boring face mask out of fabric when you can knit one? Even better, why not knit one with a wacky, crazy design that’s more like a work of art than a practical tool?

Well, that’s exactly what Icelandic artist Ýrúrarí, who is knitting some seriously amazing face masks with tongues, teeth and lips.

Just check out some of her incredible designs:

I’ve been experimenting with some of my sweater ideas to wear on a face, always interesting to see the outcome 👽 It has been fun to see masks inspired by mine, good use of quarantine time to knit💜But a reminder again, my masks are not made for safety, knitted masks are not safe to start with! Take care 🦠❌🦠❌🦠 #mask #knitting #fashionforbankrobbers

There’s even one with braces, which is sweet:

Face mask experiment #1 🦷🦷🦷 this one got braces, but I only had gold shade of yarn for them, are gold dental braces a thing? 🦷☀️🦷☀️🦷 #knitting #braces

And one with an overzealous tongue:

Face mask experiment #5 🦎 Inspiration from animals cleaning their eyes with their tongue 🧼👅 Last knitted mask I’m making for now, the original plan was to knit a tongue mask and that is now accomplished ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ( and of course this mask is not a safe face mask)❌❌❌ #masks #surrealart #tongue #fiberart #fashionforbankrobbers

Tongue, but make it fashion:

This did look different in my mind, after hours of knitting and adapting this split tongue to a face this was the outcome 👽 Thank you everyone for the good responses on my knitted mask experiments! I still have some ideas growing and will keep on sharing them🧠🧠🧠take care 💜

Ýrúrarí is drawing inspiration for the masks from her earlier work with tongues on sweaters:

I’ll probably use easter to work on some sleik-sweaters for the web shop 🐥 But it’s more fun (and cheaper💸)when you DIY your own upcycled sleik-sweaters and since everyone is stuck at home for now you can use the code HOME to get 20% off the digital copy of the pattern on my website 🌸👅🌸👅🌸 And remember to send or tag me when you take pictures of your knitting process or ready projects, I love to see and share them 👀❤️👀❤️👀 #diy #upcycle #knitting

They’re unisex, too:

Even if you aren’t specifically a fan of clothing with tongues sticking out all over the place, I think we can all agree that her artistry is truly impressive. And, judging by the number of Instagram fans she has, it seems Ýrúrarí’s work is really striking a chord with some people.

Now, if you’re asking the obvious question… of course these face masks aren’t safe for protecting against viruses. Here’s what the artist had to say…

I’ve been experimenting with some of my sweater ideas to wear on a face, always interesting to see the outcome. …good use of quarantine time to knit.

But a reminder again, my masks are not made for safety, knitted masks are not safe to start with!
