This Map Shows Favorite Disney Princesses by State, and We Totally Needed It in Our Lives

Let’s just get this out of the way right up front — I absolutely detest everything about Frozen and therefore am grumpy about the fact that so many people in America love the princesses from that movie above all others.

I mean, Elsa isn’t even a princess, she’s a queen, but I’m guessing that she’s skewing results because adults looking to identify with a Disney character are more likely to embrace a pissed-off chick who’s tired of cowing to everyone else’s expectations, etc etc.

Ahem. Anyway…

CableTV.com asked people all over the country to do some soul-searching on their favorite Disney princesses. In case you can’t count all the princesses off your fingers at the drop of a hat, here you go:

Surprisingly, even though there are so many eligible ladies to choose from, most states stuck with the same seven.

This could be because people are inherently lazy and wrote down the first princesses that came to mind, or it could be they simple chose their children’s favorites. Or, while less likely, it could be that I’m wrong about the merits of Frozen and both Elsa and Anna are awesome.

Over 27 states picked one of the two princesses (ahem) of Arendelle as their favorite, and Elsa eventually beat out her younger sister nationally. However, they tied in both South Carolina and Wisconsin, so I guess the two of them are going to have to work out an appearance schedule in those two states. The only other state with a tie was Utah which couldn’t pick between five (?) favorites. Looks like Elsa, Rapunzel, Snow White, Belle and Cinderella are going to have to battle it out if they want to go to Sundance.

My money is on Elsa, because whether or not I like her is irrelevant — she’s brutal and takes no prisoners.

Ariel won Florida (with all of that coastline, I guess they feel a kinship), and Louisiana voted for their native daughter, Tiana, from The Princess and the Frog.

The national landslide Elsa and Anna victories could also be due to the fact that CableTV.com only gave people 15 princesses to choose from instead of opening the entire canon. They excluded Moana (wtf), but included Megara and Esmerelda, neither of whom are princesses and both of whom are largely forgotten by all but the most dedicated of fans.

I personally think a new poll is needed with some more specific questions on why people are voting for each princess, but that’s just me…
