Was the Internet Better When People Created Content for Fun Instead of Profit? People Share Their Opinions.

Remember the good old days?

When YouTube and the Internet were wide open and there was a lot of funny content being created just for the hell of it?

Yeah, those days are long gone. And now people create content on different websites and make TONS of money doing it. The world sure is a strange place, isn’t it…?

And one person took to Reddit to share how they feel about the glory days as compared to the present.

YouTube (and the Internet as a whole) was much better when people were creating content as a hobby instead of a “job”

Let’s see how people on Reddit responded to this opinion.

1. Still out there…somewhere.

“I think you’ll still find them, just not as prominently.

For example, people ask why every recipe has the blogger’s life story ahead of it before you get to the recipe. It’s because search rankings require high quality prose full of relevant keywords.

And if you’re running ads on the page, or want to drive users to your other content, you don’t want the recipe at the top. You want the user to have to scroll.

That’s what gets them high in your search, so that’s why you probably won’t stumble across the innocent amateur content anymore. It doesn’t surface.”

2. Enough!

“How many times to I have to press “not interested” or “do not show me content from this channel” before youtubes algorithm realizes I do not want to watch peoples’ homemade reality TV shows.”

3. I remember…

“I remember a Youtube without ads. It was glorious.

A Youtube app where you could play songs in the background without needing a special app or rooting to do it. I think videos were capped to 10 minutes though.

Now we have hour long ads…”

4. Yup.

“It sucks so much when the creators you used to love spend half of their videos advertising some sh*tty product you have no interest in.”

5. No problem.

“What’s wrong with monetizing something you’re good at?

Do you expect your favorite creators, who spend hours on each video (dozens of hours if they are editing their own sh*t) to reject ad deals worth thousands of dollars just because their fans aren’t interested in the product??

And come on now, the longest ad is like two minutes long you can just skip past it, I’ve never seen an ad take up half a video.”

6. Check him out.

“My favorite YouTuber is Longbeachgriffy and I’ve been watching him for a long time.

That dude makes a separate video for advertisement.

He makes the ad so good you won’t even feel like it’s an ad.”

7. Gone downhill.

“Hobbies are where the heart thrives.

The content has definitely gone down hill over the years and it sucks because a lot of the time I can’t sit through videos anymore because of how bland they are.

Small Youtubers are where its at but even then a lot of them are just as bland as the bigger creators, it really is like finding a diamond in the rough.”

8. Wrap it up, already.

“Sucks when the videos are stretched out way longer than they need to be just so they get the ad revenue money.”

9. Still good.

“That’s why Red Letter Media remains my absolute favorite YouTube channel.

They’ve been there for over a decade, but haven’t changed the content of their videos just to please their ever-increasing audience. They do what they want because they love film, especially B-movie schlock.

They don’t beg for subscribers, and they don’t advertise in their videos. They’ve stayed true to their channel, and I admire them for that.”

10. Algorithms.

“The main issue is sponsorships and being dependent on a fickle algorithm.

People are scared to really express their thoughts, or be edgy lest they lose a substantial amount of their income.

Everyone self censors and is scared. Youtube is trending towards mainstream media.”

11. All about competition.

“There are several things that play into it, including higher competition. You need to play the SEO game, and very hard to get your content seen.

For lousy or great content. It sickens me to what extent people go to and makes me what to stop writing. Its an industry, like all others. There are great people out there, but they are hidden in the noise.

But even hobbyists want their content to be seen and read and enjoyed. We do it so maybe others will benefit. But yes, I agree…”

12. The old days.

“Agreed.

I prefer the days of disjointed search engines when the internet was the wild west. A much higher percentage of web pages were people’s own cr*ppy interest/group pages and not part of a curated platform.

Now the entire internet is one big curated/produced set of pages and data.”

13. Anything for a buck.

“This is the classic problem of all artists in a capitalist system, no one cares what you made unless a distributor can make a profit off of your back…”
