What Quote Has Stuck With You Your Whole Life? Here’s What People Had to Say.

My dad always says, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.”

And it’s always stuck with me!

Even though he’s said it to me about five hundred times…

What quote has stuck with you your whole life?

Here’s what AskReddit users had to say.

1. Good one.

“RYAN: I don’t get it. I don’t get what I did wrong.
DWIGHT: Not everything’s a lesson, Ryan. Sometimes you just fail.

– The Office, Initiation (season 3, episode 5). Episode was written by B.J. Novak, who also plays Ryan.”

2. It’ll get better.

““It can’t rain all the time.”

Lifted from song lyrics and used in “The Crow,” but it has helped me many times over the decades.

Things may suck now, but it won’t last and you won’t feel this unhappiness forever.”

3. Life advice.

“I have two that I always come back to:

You can choose to do whatever you want but you don’t get to choose the consequences.

Whatever your kids see you do in moderation, they will do in excess.”

4. Love it!

“If you only follow your principles when it’s convenient, then it’s not really a principle, it’s just a hobby.”

5. Yes.

“You cannot pour from an empty container.”

I used too, and still sometimes do, spread myself too thin trying to appease everyone and am often left exhausted.”

6. From Men in Black.

“Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe.

Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet.

Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.”

7. Trust your gut.

““If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it”, in the sense of your gut is telling you not to, don’t.

Seems to be good advice.”

8. Useful.

“Remembering that “you can lead a horse to water but can’t force it to drink” has proven useful countless times in my life.”

9. Sometimes…

“Sometimes a knife right through your heart is exactly what you need.

Sometimes the things that your ashamed of make you who you’re supposed to be.

I went through an extremely toxic 5 year period, until it really hit that “breaking point”. It was tough to let go and walk away but that experience made me a much stronger, better person.”

10. Life.

“It is possible to make no mistakes, and still lose. That is not weakness. That is life.”

Captain Jean-Luc Picard.”

11. Classic.

“You’re not required to set yourself on fire to keep other people warm.”

An old classic.”

12. Something to think about.

““Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”

George Carlin.”

13. Good quality.

“You’re too poor to be cheap”.

I learned to buy the best I can afford from a friend who said this. He’d watched me ( I was young and just starting out) go through poor-quality kitchen tools in the first couple of years I was on my own. So I spent $22 on a can-opener, instead of replacing a $6 one every year. It’s 35 years later, I still have that same can-opener, and it works as well as the day I bought it.

I apply this philosophy to anything I will use frequently and has the potential to break or wear out. Boots, camping gear, tools..I don’t want them to fail me when I need them, so I get the best quality I can.”
